Certification Course

The award winning PADI Open Water Diver Certification course has introduced millions of people to the adventures of scuba diving. For many it has “changed their lives forever!”
STEP ONE
Knowledge Development
The Knowledge Development portion of the course develops your familiarity with basic principles and procedures such as; basic scuba diving skills, terminology, safety procedures, how pressure affects your body, how to choose the right gear and what to consider when planning dives. This involves independent study using either PADI eLearning or PADI home-study materials. For each concept you’ll read a description and watch a video demonstration.
Option 1
PADI Online eLearning or Tablet Touch
Begin your scuba certification online where you can complete most of the academics of your PADI Open Water Diver course at your own pace, anytime, anywhere with PADI eLearning or Touch. You’ll take your quizzes online and get ready to begin Step Two (Confined water dives & classroom sessions) of the course. If you choose the eLearning or Touch option you do not need to attend the classroom sessions.
- The cost for eLearning or Touch is $179.00 and includes the Certification Processing Fee (normally $41)
- Students must also purchase the Open Water eLearning or Touch Crew Pack
- Includes: Computer Simulator Access Card, Log Book. The cost is $58.00
Option 2
Home Study Kit
You’ll begin by reading each of the five sections of the PADI Open Water Manual and watching the corresponding sections of the PADI Open Water DVD (which also previews skills you’ll learn during the pool sessions).
Open Water Crew Pack
- Includes: PADI Open Water Manual, RDP Tables, Log Book. The cost is $86.00
- DVD: Those purchasing the Open Water Crew Pack will also need to purchase the PADI Open Water Diver DVD. The cost is $55.00 (NOTE: this DVD can be shared by other family members)
*** All eLearning Crew Packs, Home Study Crew Packs and DVDs are purchased directly from Mountain Ocean Scuba. Please contact us at least 5 days prior to your Confined Water Sessions to coordinate the purchase and delivery of materials to allow for study time. If you are interested in the eLearning program please contact us to coordinate.
STEP TWO
Confined Water Dives and Classroom Sessions
Now here comes the fun part – DIVING! During this portion you will develop basic scuba skills in a pool or a body of water with pool-like conditions. You will learn how to set up your diving gear, breathe underwater for the first time, clear your mask of water, hover and many other important skills. The skills learned during the five pool dives will prepare you to dive in a variety of open water environments. While in the classroom, your instructor will review the materials you studied at home, highlight certain aspects of diving and have you take a few short quizzes and a final exam.
Prerequisites
To enroll you must be 10 years or older.
Complete the following required forms at the first session:
- PADI Medical Statement
- Liability Release and Assumption of Risk Agreement
- Standard Safe Diving Practices Statement of UnderstandingYouth Diving Responsibility and Risk Acknowledgment (for children under the age of 12)
- View the Youth Diving: Responsibility and Risk Video (for children under the age of 12)
Course Fee
Our Open Water Diver classes include:
- weekend classes
- weekday classes
- private instruction
Our fees range from $250.00 per person (group and family classes) to $450.00 per person (private lessons). Please contact us about the course that fits your needs and budget. ***All courses require a $100 deposit to hold a spot.
Fee Includes
- Classroom sessions
- All pool instruction (5 pool dives minimum)
- Use of scuba equipment in the pool
Not Included
- An exposure suit in the pool is recommended (may be available to rent and are available for purchase)
- All students must supply their own mask, snorkel, fins and booties (these are available for purchase)
- PADI eLearning or Home Study materials (there is a separate fee)
- Open Water Training Dives (there is a separate fee)
***All classes require registration at least 5 days in advance to allow for study time before class begins.
STEP THREE
Open Water Dives
Because your pool skills have been mastered and the academic material is fresh in your mind, we highly recommend you begin your open water training dives soon after completing your final pool session. We have several options from which to choose.
Open Water Dives Options 1, 2 and 3 require registration in advance with a $100.00 deposit. Prices are subject to change.
Option 1
Island Acres Lake
Island Acres Lake and Campground is located a few miles east of Grand Junction. This shallow lake is a close to Telluride and is a great place to conduct training dives. Island Acres is 135 miles from Telluride.
Fee per Person $225.00 (group) to $300.00 (semi private). A deposit of $100 per person is required.
Included:
- PADI Open Water Certification Card
- Four Training Dives
- Tanks and weights
Not Included:
- Transportation, Meals, Lodging
- Mask & Fins
- Snorkel & Booties
- BCD, Regulator & Gauges ($35 Rental Fee)
- Daily entry fee
Upcoming Island Acres Trips
TBD: Drive to Grand Junction in the morning and make two afternoon dives. Camp at Island Acres or stay in Grand Junction. Make two morning dives on the second day and drive home in the afternoon.
Trip Fee $225 per person based on a minimum of 4 students.
*** Please note: Cancelling less than one week before the starting date will result in a forfeit of your entire deposit. Changing the trip date will result in a forfeit of half your deposit.
Option 2
Homestead Crater
The Homestead Crater in Midway, Utah is located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains with 95 degree water, incredible comfort and GREAT diving! The Homestead Crater is 350 miles from Telluride. Check it out at: http://homesteadresort.com/utah-resort-activities/the-crater
Fee per Person $225.00 (group) to $300.00 (semi private). A deposit of $100 per person is required.

Not Included:

- BCD, Regulator & Gauges ($35 Rental Fee)
- Daily entry fee ($27.00 each day)
Upcoming Homestead Crater Trips:
TBD: Drive to Midway, UT for 2 days of 2 dives per day. Dates will be determined to fit students schedules. Can be week days or a weekend spending one night or two. You may decide to stay a couple of extra days skiing the nearby ski areas. Trip Fee $225 per person based on a minimum of 4 students.
* Please note: Cancelling less than one week before the starting date will result in a forfeit of your entire deposit. Changing the trip date will result in a forfeit of half your deposit.
Option 3
A Group Trip to the Tropics
Join us for a tropical dive vacation that you will never forget. Enjoy the warm water, great visibility and the company of others having fun – like you! Fee per Person $200.00

Option 4
Student Referral Kit
This is used when you plan to complete your open water dives through another PADI facility. Perfect for optimizing your vacation time by completing the Confined Water and Classroom before you travel. Once you reach your destination and are ready for your Open Water Dives, just present the kit to your PADI Instructor.
